Theater and Entertainment Technology Certificate Program
Local 22, I.A.T.S.E. Training Department
T.E.T.
Local 22, through
a partnership with Prince George's Community
College, offers college training for stage
technicians. This is a way for anyone to learn
stagehand skills in a professional facility,
get college credit, and ease your entry onto
the Union referral list. At the end of the
1-1/2 to 2 years that the program will take, a
graduate will be trained in all our skill
areas, and will be familiar with our union,
venues and personnel. They will also have had
the chance to work on our referral list in
their spare time. Prospective students need
little more than a high school education and an
aptitude for hard work to succeed in the
program and in the industry:
- This is a certificate program, open to anyone, with no class requirements other than the skills training courses. Each course covers one backstage skill, such as Lighting for the Stage, Concert and Stage Sound Reinforcement, or Stage Scenery Construction.
- Financial aid is available, through the usual government and private sources.
- Coursework is geared to entertainment technology, not design, directing, or performance. Emphasis is on standard practice in the professional workplace.
- Classes are taught in the college's professional facilities, including a proscenium theater with counterweight flyfloor, scenery shop, and current lighting and audio systems.
- Production jobs are part of the coursework, giving you hands-on experience with all the systems and equipment.
- Local 22 arranges "labs" for the classes in working venues, offering opportunities for discussion with production professionals and access to equipment and technology in workplaces.
- Students who sign up with the Local 22 referral system during the program are automatically placed on the D list upon graduation, and are eligible for the next available C test.
Graduates will find numerous opportunities for jobs, with our employers and us, with manufacturers and retailers supplying the industry, and with production companies who send shows throughout the world. There are places for many specialists: in scenery construction, production carpentry, lighting, sound, and rigging, automation programming, film work, video and CAD technology, and developing areas in theme parks, cruise ships, and casinos.
